Depression causes and treatment according to Ayurveda

Causes of depression

When the Rajas and Tamas (dosha of the mana –mind) energies are not normal, they can cause doshas, which are deviated mental functions. Thedoshaswhich can occur are - lust, anger, greed, attachment, jealousy, ego, delusion, grief, depression, anxiety, phobia, and euphoria.

If we consume a diet that is not satvik, meaning it enhances the Rajas and Tamas elements, it can increase the doshas listed above and cause nervous dysfunction. If not corrected in time, this could lead to a permanent vitiated condition.

The altered nervous condition, such as depression or anxiety, can be improved by adopting a satvik lifestyle and diet. However, realistically, it can take a long time to reverse the impact of Rajas and Tamas.

Treatment

Fortunately, Ayurveda has recommended the use of herbs containing medhya-rasaayan like Brahmi, Ashwagandha, Shankhpushpi, Jatamaansi, etc. this helps you revive from nervous weakness issues quickly and without any side effects.

By strengthening the nerves, these herbs helps resolve all nerve-related problems such as anxiety, nervous dysfunction, stress, anger, depression, fear, palpitation, phobia, lack of confidence, irritability, intolerance, sleeplessness, etc. which are otherwise observed in a patient with depression.

It is also important to understand that using chemical-based medication to overcome stress, depression, anxiety, or any related problems only suppresses the symptoms temporarily and leaves behind a lot of side effects.

Ayurveda is a system that has been delivering excellent remedies and cures for centuries because it believes in treating the body as a whole instead of just tinkering with the symptoms of a particular part.Hence adopting Ayurveda will be of benefit in such cases of mental health issues.
